Owners of a pub in the village of Addingham have reported a noticeable increase in business after reintroducing a weekly “Tax-Free Monday” offering.
The Fleece in Addingham have been deducting the value of VAT on food and drink every Monday for members of the pub’s loyalty programme, which the company say has led to an estimated 30 % uplift in trade.
The offer, which covers items including pints, wine and portions of food, is available exclusively to loyalty club members.
Leading examples of pricing under the scheme include a pint reduced from £5.15 to £3.92 and a food item dropping from £16.95 to £14.13.
The pub’s management said they introduced the discount scheme after seeing similar results in previous years.
They described the initiative as a way to thank customers while encouraging additional trade on typically quieter weekdays.
By covering the tax themselves rather than passing it onto customers, the business says it has encouraged groups of friends and families to visit and spend more than they might on an ordinary Monday.
Some observers suggest that schemes like this could provide a helpful boost for hospitality venues during off-peak times.
