Ilkley Thingery official opening on Saturday

A library with a difference which aims to promotes the sharing of resources will officially throw open its doors to the public in Ilkley on Saturday, 27 May.

The “Thingery” (library of things) will allow people to borrow a whole host of useful objects – from pressure washers to children’s toys – to help reduce waste and promote sustainabilityin the community.

Any member can borrow an item from the online catalogue for a small fee and then pick it up and use it for a designated period of time, just like a book from a library.

The vision of the project is to help to build a thriving community where resource sharing is the norm, and access to a wide range of items is equally available.

The grand opening will take place at the home of Ilkley Thingery, number 10 Church Street, between 11am and 4pm on Saturday, 27 May.

On the day there will be tool sharpening and wood restoration demonstrations, children’s activities, refreshments, board games and a chance to sign up to borrow items with help of the volunteers.

Membership fees start at £5 a year and borrowing fees are based on the type of item and length of loan.

Kath Steward, who is the project lead said: “This is an idea that has been bubbling away for the past 3 years. Once you think about it, the idea of a library to borrow things is so obvious you wonder why it hasn't happened before. It is fantastic to have been given the funding to get it up and running. We intend to develop the Thingery to run Repair Cafes and practical workshops to teach various skills. We also want to be a friendly space for people to come and visit. Everyone is welcome".

The first library of things emerged in Frome in Somerset in 2015 and now there are over 40 community schemes in the UK, including one in Leeds.

The catalogue and membership details for Ilkley Thingery are available on Ilkleythingery.org where you will find everything from sports and camping equipment, gardening tools, a wine fridge and many other useful items.

The Thingery team is made up of dedicated volunteers and staff members and the Thingery journey can be followed on its social media channels.
