Work has started on new state-of-the-art accommodation facility at Airedale Hospital which will make a real difference to both patients and staff.

Healthcare design and build contractor Darwin Group Ltd has started the project including a 15 bed high dependency unit (HDU) and a 30 bed general acute ward at the hospital.  The project is scheduled for completion in March 2022 at a cost of £15 million.

The state-of-the-art accommodation will be built on a steep sloping site and connected back to the existing hospital corridor at ground floor level. A new under-croft space, on the lower ground floor, will accommodate the plant room for the new development.

Darwin Group’s in-house management team are working closely with Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and its estates and facilities subsidiary, AGH Solutions, to ensure minimal disruption to the hospital’s services and site facilities during the construction period. Darwin Group will achieve this through delivering large parts of the project using a volumetric hybrid modular system manufactured off-site utilising modern methods of construction in the Darwin Group’s factory.

There is a dedicated Project Manager on-site in regular communication with the Trust to ensure that other hospital users are considered at every stage of the works.

The Darwin Group team is made up of in-house professionals who have a proven track record of delivering a bespoke high quality turnkey service, cover all stages of the project from planning and design, to construction and landscaping.

Charles Pierce, Managing Director at Darwin Group, said: “We are proud to have delivered some fantastic NHS buildings and we are thrilled to add this project to our portfolio. The initial designs for the building look fantastic and the team are looking forward to bringing the plans to life.”

David Moss, Managing Director of AGH Solutions, on behalf of Airedale NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are pleased that our building works are beginning, and that Darwin Group are working with us on this project. It will make a real difference to both our patients and our staff, and I am looking forward to seeing the building take shape.”
