Community fund helps Ilkley charity bring people together

Bolton Bridge Co-op Manager Craig Watson & Good Neighbours Moving On Co-ordinator Hannah Walton

A local charity is raising funds that will help teach older residents how to communicate with links such as Zoom and Facetime.

Ilkley and District Good Neighbour’s Moving On project – a social group which brings people together who may feel isolated or lonely – has been selected as a beneficiary by the Co-op Local Community Fund.

“The importance of human connection is paramount for good mental and physical health and is the reason that our weekly social group Moving On was originally established” said charity trustee Anita Dunford. “ This pandemic has highlighted just how difficult and debilitating social isolation can be, especially for the older generation, some of whom have been isolating for months with little interaction with others.

“Although our wonderful group of volunteers have helped overcome this by maintaining regular contact and support with our clients, with regular phone calls and activity packs, this very welcome support by the Co-op and its members will be a welcome additional help. We will use the funding to teach some of our older clients about accessing the internet and how to communicate with others and the wider community” said Anita.

The charity is currently raising funds to purchase equipment including individual tablets that will explain and teach the benefits of the internet and how to access others through platforms such as Zoom and Facetime.

Moving On Co-ordinator Hannah Walton added: “We are looking forward to the time when our social sessions can resume and when we can show our clients with our new equipment how modern technology can make a real difference to their lives. Looking ahead, please do support us by nominating Ilkley Good Neighbours as your chosen charity whenever you shop in the Co-op as it will help local causes such as ours. This can be done instore or by signing up online at https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/48178.”

Last year £15 million was shared with over 4500 local organisations and causes. Co-op Store Manager Craig Watson said: “The Co-op is committed to connecting communities and making a difference locally, and through our refreshed Membership programme, and following the launch of a new digital app, we are now able to do more of this – creating more value for our members and communities. Customers can make a difference to local groups such as Good Neighbours every time they shop with us. Co-op now donates 2p in every pound to community causes every time a Member swipes their membership card when buying own-branded products. “
