Drive-in cinema planned for Skipton next month

Skipton BID is bringing a drive-in cinema experience to town for three days in March, with Rombalds Radio listeners asked to help pick which films will be shown.

The 3-day cinematic schedule of movies will take place on Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th March in the Skipton Castle Car Park on The Bailey.

Each screening will welcome 60 cars - and will encourage visitors to enjoy Skipton's shops, cafes and restaurants before or after the film screenings. In the event that we are still in lockdown at the end of March or in a heavily-restricted tier system the event will be postponed until April.

Rombalds Radio has teamed up with Skipton BID to help select the films that will be shown each day. There will be 9 screened in total at 3pm, 6pm and 9pm on each of the dates.

The online voting system to select the films that will be shown is available here on the Rombalds Radio website, and is open until Friday 26th February.

Everyone who votes will also be entered into a prize draw to win a Blue Sky Golden Circle Movie Experience to a film of your choice at the drive-in cinema!

Films to pick from include The Greatest Showman, Grease, Dirty Dancing, Mamma Mia, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Peter Rabbit, The Lion King and more!

Geraldine Thompson, Skipton BID Manager and Director, says “After a year when all events in the area have had to be cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic, we are delighted to bring a Covid-safe event to Skipton next month.

“We’re calling it Movies Under the Stars” and planning this with Blue Sky Cinema has been a delight, as they bring extensive experience to the table, producing drive-in cinema events under various tier structures for the last year. Hence we’re confident that once lockdown restrictions are eased, the event can be a success for families, couples and support bubbles to enjoy in a safe environment outside of their home. We chose Skipton Castle Bailey Car Park due to the size, keeping it small and bespoke, yet big enough to create an atmosphere. If we do still find ourselves in lockdown at the end of March, the event will be postponed until the respective weekend in April.”

Tickets will go on sale in early March once the film selections have been finalised.

Geraldine adds, “Supporting the business community, visitors to the drive-in event will have a chance to visit the town’s shops, restaurants, cafes and attractions, subject to Covid-guidelines at the time. Local businesses will also have the opportunity to advertise on the big screen at no charge before the film screenings.”
