Keighley MP creates Captain Sir Tom Moore Memorial Commission

Plans for a memorial in Keighley to recognise the achievements of Captain Sir Tom Moore will be overseen by the town's MP Robbie Moore.

Mr Moore has set up a commission, which he will chair, and has invited other civic figures to join the team.

The group will decide how best to honour Captain Sir Tom, who died last week aged 100, with local residents invited to make suggestions.

Captain Sir Tom raised more than £30m for NHS charities and inspired many others to undertake fundraising challenges at the height of the pandemic. Last summer, he was made an Honorary Freeman of Keighley and a plaque was unveiled in his honour close to Keighley's war memorial in the Town Hall Square.

A large 'Capt Tom - Keighley Lad' sign was originally put on the former Keighley College site on North Street after the World War II veteran came to prominence, but this was only temporary and was removed in December.

Robbie Moore MP said: “Captain Sir Tom Moore was an inspiration to us all. During the dark days of the pandemic, he brought a glimmer of hope to all and inspired a whole nation. His efforts and achievements in his final year have been captured all over the world.

“It would be a fitting tribute if his birth town could honour this local hero with a long-lasting memorial. I have already received lots of suggestions from members of the public as well as businesses. That is why I am setting up this commission so Keighley can decide how best to pay tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore.”

Mr Moore will chair the commission - and says a number of local community leaders including civic figures, leaders from education and health, as well as a member of the public and the Armed Forces, have been invited to join the commission.

Following approval from the commission, local residents will be invited to make suggestions about what form the memorial should take.
