Keighley Town Council sponsors International Yoga Day event

Keighley Town Council says it is proud to be the first council in the UK to sponsor an event for International Yoga Day next month.

It will be held on Sunday 11th June at the Civic Centre on North Street, Keighley which the Mayor, Cllr Mohammed Nazam, will host with invited guests including Dr. Shashank Vikram, Consulate General of India.

Other guests are from the local yoga community as well as councillors and community organisations.

The mayor expressed his delight at being invited to the event saying: “In my first few days of becoming Mayor, I was introduced to the principles of Thai Chi. Now I’m to learn about the benefits of yoga and isn’t it excellent that the council is leading the way in helping to develop yoga in the
district?

"I want the people of Keighley to know that the council takes health and wellbeing seriously and that we will support initiatives if we can."

The one-hour session is free of charge and will be led by professional tutor Princi Bansal between 12pm and 1pm and aims to encourage the local community to try yoga for the first time or learn new techniques for those who are regular yoga-goers already.

Princi has been practicing yoga for the past four years with Dr Dheeraj Prakash Joshi ji and is keen to help people of all ages improve their mental and physical wellbeing through the yogic practices with Hatha yoga and Raj yoga styles.

It is hoped that those new to yoga will seek out a local group to join and that this becomes part of their busy weekly life.

It is also hoped that in time, participants will appreciate the health and wellbeing benefits of yoga to further strengthen their commitment to a growing, local yoga community in Keighley. This in turn will help clubs and groups become more sustainable, host more sessions, and employ the services of more yoga practitioners.

Participants are asked to arrive early as only 20 places will be available, allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Some mats will be available, but participants are also asked to bring their own if they have them.

The event will take place in the main hall on the first floor of the Civic Centre on North Street in Keighley.
