Silsden residents offered tablet loans to help them stay connected

People over 55 are being given computer tablets with access to the internet to help them get online and overcome isolation and loneliness during the pandemic.

The scheme, called 'Cobbydale Connected', has been set up by Friends of Silsden Town Hall together with Worth Connecting.

Paul Kilgallon, Chairman of Silsden Town Hall says: "The pandemic has made our lives more challenging in many ways, including struggles with isolation and loneliness. Technology has eased this disconnect for many of us; but what if you don’t have access to this technology, or don’t know how to use it? This is particularly prevalent amongst the older generations."

People can be loaned a Samsung Android tablet for up to six weeks, during which time they'll get tuition and support over the phone from an expert. The tablets come with a SIM card so that they can be connected to the internet without the need for home broadband.

A current participant in the scheme said: “It’s a bit like a phone. I can receive calls, and I’m still not really sure how everything works, but I can see my family once a week on WhatsApp which is something I couldn’t do before – it’s great!”

The aim of the project is to support older Silsden residents to get better connected using IT, become more independent, reduce loneliness and improve confidence and wellbeing.

“We want to help our residents to connect with family and friends, as well as participate in online groups that will reduce their feelings of isolation,” added Paul Kilgallon. "If you, or someone you know, want to be able to use a digital device to find information, make social connections or to benefit from online services, Cobbydale Connected can help."

The project is supporting residents of Silsden and the surrounding area - those taking part in the scheme will receive an initial phone call by a Worth Connecting team member, which will then be followed up with a maximum of six weeks support from a DBS-checked, trained and supervised team.
