Sunflower growing competition supports Manorlands Hospice

Green-fingered people are being invited to take part in a competition to grow the tallest sunflower while raising money for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope.

The Wharfedale Fundraising Group for Manorlands Hospice has just opened its Sunflower Challenge for entries - participants have until 1st September to see who can grow the tallest sunflower.

A suggested minimum donation of £5 to the charity gets you into the competition and there will be prizes for the overall winner, as well as for the best photograph of sunflowers.

The yellow sunflower is often used all over the world as the emblem of hospice care, with the seeds representing patients and the petals as love, care and compassion. Manorlands supports people across Wharfedale, Craven and Airedale by providing palliative care for those with life-limiting conditions.

Molly Ralphson, Community Fundraiser, said: “After a cold and snowy winter, we hope lots of people will sign up to this competition and enjoy growing some big, beautiful sunflowers.

"Thank you to our Wharfedale Fundraising Group for their work in organising this colourful challenge, which we hope will spread a little sunshine whilst raising much-needed funds to support the vital work of the hospice.”
