Cherie Melvin, a Healthcare Support Worker in Airedale NHS Foundation Trust’s Cardiac Rehabilitation team, has been awarded the Chief Nursing Officer for England’s Healthcare Support Worker Award.

The award recognises the vital contribution of Healthcare Support Workers in England and their exceptional support of nursing and midwifery practice.

Cherie, from Keighley, has worked at Airedale General Hospital for 32 years and was nominated by Nicola Drake, Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinical Lead at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust:

“Cherie has a natural skill in building rapport with her patients and making them feel at ease,” says Nicola. “She is compassionate to her colleagues in the community as well as her patients, treats people individually and alters her care accordingly.

“Cherie often goes the extra mile to support patients, including those with additional needs, to ensure they feel comfortable to come to the classes and make the most out of their sessions so that they can increase their fitness levels and improve their quality of life.”

Cherie was surprised with the award at Airedale’s Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Conference by NHS England’s Regional Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Workforce lead, Victoria Bagshaw, in the presence of Duncan Burton, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer NHS England.

“I had no idea I was receiving the award,” said Cherie. “I feel so proud to receive recognition for the support that I am able to provide to patients, their families and my team members.”

Deputy Chief Nurse at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, Sajan Sathyan, said: “The theme for the Trust’s Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Conference this year was ‘Airedale Compassion in Action’ and Cherie has certainly exemplified this in her work with the Cardiac Rehabilitation team.

“It was fantastic to see Cherie’s commitment to patient-centred care being recognised at a national level.

“Congratulations to Cherie on this brilliant achievement.”
