Airedale Hospital’s Flying Dalesman wins ‘Celebrate as One’ award

Airedale Hospital and Community Charity and Ultimate (Commercial) Interiors Ltd have won a Celebrate as One Award in the ‘Working in Partnership’ category of Bradford District and Craven’s Health and Care in Partnership Awards 2023.

These awards recognise projects taking place across the NHS, community and care sectors throughout Bradford district and Craven.

Cross Hills-based company Ultimate (Commercial) Interiors Ltd and Airedale Hospital and Community Charity were awarded for their collaboration in renovating the charity’s Pacer train, The Flying Dalesman.

After winning the train carriage in 2019 from National Rail’s ‘Win a Pacer’ competition, the charity chose to transform the interior into both a non-clinical haven for hospital patients and a community space available for hire.

Ultimate partnered with the charity in the winter of 2022 and designed the interior of the train carriage, incorporating natural elements to bring the outside in, and a sensory room for those with additional needs.

Jodie Hearnshaw, Charity Manager, said: “This has been a long project in the making.  We won the train before COVID, but then had to pause everything during the pandemic.  Partnering with Ultimate was a game-changer and we are delighted they came aboard – their amazing contribution deserves to be recognised with this award and we are so proud that we’ve won it together.

“The train is a fantastic space that we hope will entertain our younger patients and be a great resource for our community.”

Paul Alexander, Director at Ultimate, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that everybody who had a hand in this inspiring and unique project has had their efforts recognised with a Celebrate as One award for The Flying Dalesman.

“The Ultimate (Commercial) Interiors team is proud of our role in the project and thank our project sponsors and delivery partners for crafting such a vibrant space for the community to enjoy.”
