Burley Show returns on bank holiday Monday

Excitement is building for the green-fingered residents of Burley-in-Wharfedale and surrounding area as preparations are made for Burley Show.

The show is on Bank Holiday Monday, August, 28 at the Queen’s Hall. Anyone who lives in Burley-in-Wharfedale and Burley Woodhead can enter their vegetables, flowers, fruit, plants, baking and handicrafts, including photography.

There is a popular junior section too for the children. Show schedules of all the classes with full details can be found and downloaded from Burley Gardeners website - www.burleygardeners.co.uk or Burley Gardeners Facebook, or from Burley Library and the Roundhouse.

Villagers can bring their entries to the Queen’s Hall on the day between 10am & 12 noon. There is a small charge to enter. The Show will be open to the general public for viewing from 2.15pm on the day. Trophies and prizes will be presented to winners at 4pm by Duncan Ault, Chair of Burley Community Trust.

During the afternoon there will be several displays to enjoy and no visit is complete without visiting the tearoom for gorgeous home-made cakes. The afternoon ends about 4.30pm with the very popular auction of entries that the growers and bakers donate!

Why don’t you have a go and enter something? You don’t need to be an expert. It is great fun and you will be supporting a long-standing village event. Who knows – you might even win a prize.

The first show was held in 1858 and continued into the 1920s. There was then a lull for 60 or so years until in 1982 when the Friends of the Round House put on a show in The Grange. A show has been held annual in August ever since and became known as the Burley Show.

Each year it grew larger and eventually moved to Burley Middle School. In 1996 it became independent from the community council and the name of the Flower show Committee became the Burley Gardeners' Association.

In 2000 the show moved to its current venue at the Queen's Hall and draws large crowds of enthusiasts and appreciative visitors each year.

Burley Gardeners' Association meets several times throughout the year for illustrated talks and demonstrations on a wide range of gardening topics. In the summer it has at least one organised visit to a garden. Annual Membership runs from September and costs £7 for an individual and £10 for a family. It holds a Plant Sale in May.
