Captain Tom comes home

The family of Captain Sir Tom Moore have brought his ashes back to his hometown of Keighley.

Representatives from local Keighley organisations, services and schools attended Morton Cemetery and provided a guard of honour for the family. The family of Captain Sir Tom Moore held a short service at the graveside at Morton Cemetery where the ashes were interred.

Captain Sir Tom Moore, who was born and raised in Keighley, touched the hearts and minds of people across the UK and around the world with his fighting spirit and optimism during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the eve of his 100th birthday, he decided to raise money for NHS Charities Together by walking laps of his garden. When he began his journey, with the aid of a walking frame, his goal was to raise £1,000. But this simple act got the attention of the world’s media and, as the news travelled, donations flooded in and he raised over £32 million and attracted the admiration and affection of millions more.

Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Shabir Hussain, said: “We are immensely proud of Captain Sir Tom Moore, who is a son of our district, born and bred in Keighley, and of his determination and optimism to get the job done showing true Yorkshire grit.

“It has been a huge honour to work with Captain Sir Tom Moore’s family and Keighley Town Council to bring him back to his home of Keighley and recognise and honour his memory and everything he achieved.”

Keighley Town Mayor Cllr Julie Adams commented, “Keighley Town Council was honoured to be asked by Capt Tom’s family to help mark his final journey to his hometown. The people of Keighley are immensely proud of Capt. Tom and we are all determined to ensure his legacy continues for many years to come.

“I would like to thank the representatives from the various organisations and charities for forming a fitting guard of honour for Cpt Tom.

“I would like to thank Bradford Council for working closely with the Town Council to facilitate Capt. Tom’s homecoming especially the Bereavement Services and Emergency Planning teams.”

Keighley College has agreed to provide afternoon tea following the ceremony.
