Kindness stall offers new parents hand-knitted baby items for winter

Midwives at Airedale Hospital are offering new and expectant parents a range of hand-knitted baby items to help keep babies warm this winter.

The items, which have been donated by knitters from the local community are available in the antenatal clinic and are offered free to those who need them via a 'Cost of Living Kindness stall'.

Amongst the items available are baby blankets, cardigans, mittens and booties.

Zoe Ludgate, an Early Intervention Midwife at Airedale Hospital explains: “We are very fortunate in Airedale maternity to have a constant stream of knitted items made with love and kindly donated by our local community. We know that many of our families have been affected by the cost of living crisis, especially rising fuel bills, so we hope our 'Cost of Living Kindness stall' can provide items that families can use to keep their babies warm during these colder months."

The stall is located in the Antenatal Clinic at Airedale Hospital where items can be taken for free or for a small donation to the Airedale Hospital & Community Charity. There is also limited stock of teddy bears for older siblings. The initiative supports and promotes the department’s “Safe Sleep” advice on how to keep your baby warm but safe during winter.

Midwives in Airedale’s Neonatal department have also been busy raising awareness and support for their early arrivals by celebrating World Prematurity Day at the end of November.

Chloe Taylor, a Professional Nurse Advocate and Neonatal sister comments: “World Prematurity Day is important to us on the neonatal unit because not many people know that our small world exists until you have the unfortunate experience of having a premature baby. Through WPD, we celebrate all our current babies who were born premature as well as the parents and families and all our neonatal graduates who have got bigger and grown up. Our staff spend weeks and months with these babies and families and reaching those milestones emphasises the hard work that our nursing and support staff do."
