Local music group welcomes new members

Wharfedale Recorded Music Society is looking for new members to share their enjoyment of classical music.

“We have an exciting programme planned for our 80th Season, starting on Wednesday 4th October, with symphonies by Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler”, said Society member Pip Cowling.

The new programme will also feature the work of women musicians, beginning on !8th October with the life and music of Clara Schumann, and in November, a talk by visiting speaker Chris Skidmore called “The feminine thread in French music”, about the 17th Century French harpsichordist and composer Elisabeth Jaquet de la Guerre. In March, the group will hear music played by some “Great female pianists of our time”.

To delight opera lovers in January, Puccini will be the subject of a talk by well-known local conductor John Anderson, and Verdi fans can enjoy “La Traviata”, presented both as an opera and as a ballet in February.

The symphony theme will return in the New Year, with works by Rachmaninov, Elgar, Britten and Shostakovich. Choral music by Bach, Vaughan Williams, and Elgar is also planned.

“There really will be something for everyone to enjoy,” said Pip Cowling. “We are a friendly and informal group, and we extend a warm welcome to anyone who would like to come along and enjoy an evening of good music and friendly company.”

The Society meets on Wednesday evenings at St John’s Church Hall, Ben Rhydding, at 7.45pm. For full details, contact Catherine Clarke on 01274 608664 or Pip Cowling on 0786 600 4838.
