Mum and son run up a £1475 fundraising total for Airedale

A mum and son have raised £1,475 by taking part in the London Big Half Marathon, raising money to support patients and families on the palliative care ward at Airedale Hospital.

Amanda and Angus Duncan from Barnoldswick braved the heatwave to take part in the event earlier this month.

The pair were fundraising for a new refreshment trolley for Airedale's palliative care department. This was a cause close to their hearts as Amanda’s mother had recently sadly passed away on Ward 7 under their end-of-life care, during which the family had taken comfort in a refreshment and care trolley provided by Airedale Hospital & Community Charity.

Airedale’s comfort trolleys each contain an insulated flask for hot drinks, biscuits, and many other refreshments that are regularly refilled and replaced during the stay. Another feature of these trolleys is a Bluetooth speaker, however this had gone missing at the time of Amanda and Angus’ visits.

The pair are passionate about enabling all families of patients receiving end-of-life care to benefit from the same provision and chose to also put their funds towards replacing the missing Bluetooth speaker so that families could listen to music on their visits.

Amanda said: “For Angus and me, The Big Half was an opportunity to put our love of running to good use, to give something back to the staff both on Ward 7 and the palliative care team who went above and beyond to look after my mum and us as a family.

“My mum would have been so proud, as she was an extremely active individual, who spent many hours walking even in the midst of her cancer treatment.

“We are thrilled and extremely grateful to everyone who donated.”

Nichola Tullett, from the Palliative Care Team, said: “The comfort trollies make a huge difference to patients’ loved ones. We have had such a positive response since we introduced them last year.

“Receiving more donations enables us to increase the number of trollies we have on each ward and gives us the extra funds to replace damaged and missing items.

“The donations we receive help us to provide those little extras that make a big difference at such a difficult time.”

Amanda and Angus had exceeded their £500 target by 295%, raising an incredible £1,475. The extra money raised will enable the Palliative Care Team to provide even more support to patients and their loved ones.
