New route unveiled for Keighley 10k and 5k runs

A new and improved route for the Keighley 10k and 5k has been unveiled – and it includes the opportunity to take in several of the area’s beautiful parklands and historical local landmarks.

Held on Mother’s Day – Sunday 19 March – the popular run and walk, which is now in its 16th year, will once again start at Keighley’s Victoria Park.

However, the 10k will now see runners head out into the countryside and take in the stunning grounds of Keighley Golf Club, before re-joining the 5k runners in a section along the picturesque Leeds Liverpool canal towpath in Riddlesden.

From there, both routes pass through the historic East Riddlesden Hall estate before heading back to the finish line at Victoria Park.

Neville Whittingham, who is the only person to have run in all 16 previous events, is looking forward to tackling the new route, which is also a lot flatter than in previous years.

He said: "I did a recce of most of the new route last week, and it is easier but still has the quirky feel that the Keighley 10k has always had. I suspect it will attract quick runners because it's less hilly and more runnable.

“I’m looking forward to running along the Leeds Liverpool canal towpath and through the beautiful East Riddlesden Hall grounds, one of many of the amazing heritage buildings that Keighley has to offer."

All proceeds from the Keighley 10k and 5k go to Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope, which provides expert palliative care and support for people living with life-limiting conditions and their families across Wharfedale, Airedale, Bradford and Craven.

Andrew Wood, Community Fundraising Manager at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, said: “For those who felt the 10k had become too challenging for them, this year will be a refreshing change as the new route has only just over half as much cumulative climb.

“Although more manageable, the event will be just as fun and exciting, and we hope people of all ages and abilities from the Keighley community will pull on their trainers and join us on the day to raise vital funds.”

This year’s Keighley 10k and 5k is once again sponsored by family-run car dealership Colin Appleyard, which is based in the town.

Andrew adds: “We’d like to say a particular thank you to the whole team at Colin Appleyard for their ongoing support for the run, as well as many other events over the years. We are looking forward to welcoming them back and we're so grateful for their longstanding support, which helps us continue to be there when it matters.”

Since it started in 2007 more than 10,000 runners have taken part in the Keighley 10k and 5k, raising more than £450,000.

The early bird entry fee of £12 is ending soon. To take advantage of the offer, visit: sueryder.org/keighley10k.
