'Operation Shipdon' tackles speeding and anti-social driving in Keighley

Operation Shipdon, a joint effort between the Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team, Keighley Town Council, and West Yorkshire Police, has concluded its mission to tackle speeding and anti-social driving in Keighley for the 2022-2023 fiscal year.

With the support of Keighley Town Council and partnership funding, this operation has made significant strides in enhancing road safety and enforcement efforts in Keighley.

Keighley Town Mayor, Councillor John Kirby expressed his support for the initiative saying “The success of Operation Shipdon 2022-2023 reflects the power of community collaboration and commitment to road safety in Keighley. By working together, we are making our roads safer for everyone and supporting the Vision Zero initiative. We are dedicated to this mission, ensuring a brighter future for our community.”

Operation Shipdon officially commenced in August 2022 and concluded at the end of March 2023. The primary focus was on addressing speeding violations and related offences within Keighley Central, Keighley West, Keighley East and Oakworth wards covered by Keighley Town Council.

To target the problem effectively, a total of 12 hotspots for speeding were identified in these areas, based on data from routine deployments, enforcement activities, SpeedWatches, public complaints, and the results of the Town Council’s resident speeding survey.

The operation's success is evident in the impressive numbers: 530 road traffic offences were dealt with and members of the public have provided positive feedback regarding the enforcement efforts. The operation also dedicated 86 high-visibility deployment shifts, contributing significantly to road safety in Keighley.

Inspector John Barker who heads up Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Speeding and anti-social driving has been an ongoing concern for residents in Keighley. Operation Shipdon has seen a positive impact on people complying with the speed limits and an improvement on standards of driving across the area."

“Road safety is a top priority for Keighley supporting the work of Vision Zero, the aim to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads by 50% by 2030 and to zero by 2040.  By working in partnership, these additional resources for Keighley are helping to make the roads safer for all.

"Furthermore, the work undertaken as part of Operation Shipdon is regularly discussed in partnership meetings with BDMC Highways. This collaboration aims to support long-term problem-solving efforts, such as engineered highway designs, speed limit adjustments and speed surveys for potential Safety Camera deployment.

"Our deployments are already underway for the 2023-2024 Operation Deployment, ensuring a continued commitment to enhancing road safety in Keighley."
