Overhaul of Skipton railway station car park set for approval

Wednesday, 27 September 2023 14:50

By Thomas Barrett, Local Democracy Reporter

Councillors will meet on Tuesday to consider plans to reconfigure Skipton railway station’s car park.

At the same meeting they will also make a decision on whether to replace a nearby bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool canal.

The changes form part of the £7.8m “Skipton Gateway” scheme and have been recommended for approval in two separate officer reports.

Plans include reconfiguring the station car park to give more space for 10 EV charging points, disabled parking bays and a cycle shelter.

Existing access to the car park would be retained and a new one-way system would be created. A exit is proposed in the west of the station car park onto Broughton Road which would require the part demolition and realignment of a 22m stone boundary wall.

The Black Walk footpath into Skipton town centre would also be resurfaced.

Under the plans, 12 trees would be removed from within the car park, however, the proposal would provide 19 replacement trees wildflower green roofs, shrub planting and rain gardens.

An additional 17 trees would be planted off-site within the Aireville estate.

A separate application to replace Gallows Bridge is also recommended for approval.

The structure is an important and well-used crossing of the canal as it provides the most direct connection between the bus and railway stations. It also offers a crossing for pedestrians between Morrisons, Cavendish Street car park and the town centre. But according to the council, uneven steps at both ends of the 13.5m bridge are a slip hazard and the bridge deck is in poor condition.

Documents state that the new bridge has been inspired by an old timber bridge that was replaced in the 1970s and it will consist of a steel truss and deck.

The gateway proposals had included a cycle lane on Broughton Road between Skipton train station and the town centre, but this was scrapped after concerns were raised over the safety of cyclists and loss of a taxi rank.

Councillors on the Skipton & Ripon planning committee will meet at Belle Vue Square in Skipton to make a final decision on the car park and bridge proposals.

They will be paid paid for using money won from the government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

If approved, the council will appoint a building firm to carry out the works with construction is set to begin in the winter.
