Plan for new Changing Places toilet in Ilkley town centre

Monday, 8 April 2024 20:35

By Chris Young, Local Democracy Reporter

A 'changing places' toilet could be installed in the centre of Ilkley if new plans are approved.

Bradford Council has submitted plans for the new facility next to the existing town toilets in the car park off South Hawksworth Street.

Changing Places toilets are for people with severe disabilities, and include washing and changing facilities.

There has been a national push for more of these facilities to be installed in town and city centres to make them more accessible.

Plans show that the Ilkley toilets would be constructed in an area currently used as bin storage.

The application says: “This is a government mandated requirement to install in pre-determined locations around the local authority accessible Changing Places Toilets.

“Ilkley Car Park, adjacent to existing Public Toilet/Convenience, happens to be one such chosen locations.”

A decision on the application is expected next month.

Similar plans to install such facilities in the district have been met with setbacks.

Bradford Council withdrew a planning application for a Changing Spaces toilet next to Cartwright Hall in Lister Park after a Conservation officer raised concerns about fitting a modern building next to a Grade II listed gallery.

And similar concerns have been raised over a facility planned for Cliffe Castle Museum in Keighley.
