Questions over introduction of food waste collections in Bradford district

Wednesday, 13 December 2023 17:51

By Chris Young, Local Democracy Reporter

The Government has been urged to provide more detail on how councils will fund planned weekly food waste collections that are due to start in 2026.

New recycling rules recently set out by Government calls for separate weekly food waste collections to become a normal council service from Spring 2026.

Bosses at cash-strapped Bradford Council say the introduction of such collections would have a “huge implementation cost” for authorities that don’t currently collect food waste separately – including Bradford.

Currently just half of the country’s councils have separate food waste collections.

Councillor Anna Watson (Green, Shipley) recently asked Bradford Council bosses for an update on how the new service will be introduced.

A response to Cllr Watson, released late last month, said: “There has been a revised policy from government announced (subject to consultation) that from April 2026, food waste will have to be collected at kerbside.

“There is a huge implementation cost involved and work is underway to plan for the change (subject to consultation and available funds).

“Given the government’s commitment that they will not impose new burdens without additional funding, we are writing to government to ask how they expect us to fund this.”
