Skipton Now: the best way to spend the summer holidays

Get ready for a month packed with exciting events around Skipton! North Yorkshire Council is delighted to announce the first Skipton Now festival, a month-long celebration of Skipton's heritage and culture.

Skipton’s Heritage Action Zone team has been working on an extensive catalogue of entertainment in August.

People of all ages will enjoy this fantastic festival, and anyone can immerse themselves in the activities, taking place in areas of Skipton which have benefitted from the HSHAZ project. Spend time at the Town Hall, Craven Museum, Skipton Library, Craven Arts House, the Canal Quarter, and the ginnels. With support from Skipton BID and the Town Council, August will be a month brimming with fun for families, visitors, and residents, from historical guided walks to pop-up cinema screenings.

The festival gets off to a lively start with Yorkshire Day on Tuesday, 1st August, celebrating God's Own Country with various Yorkshire-themed activities. The HSHAZ team will have a stall on the High Street where you can pick up your free Skipton Now programme. Take part in workshops at Skipton Puppet Festival (2nd – 6th August) and indulge at Skipton Foodie Weekend on 12th – 13th August at the Canal Basin.

Why not hone your skills with the diverse programme of free workshops during Skipton Now? Be a curator for the day at Craven Museum, learn knitting and crochet techniques with Yarndale, paint in the Roses and Castles canal boat style, write and produce a song, or learn photography with just your phone camera.

The newly-restored telephone boxes have returned to the front of Skipton Town Hall – peep inside to see the beautiful art installations! See the exhibitions at Craven Arts House, including the 'Open Studios' opportunity on the bank holiday weekend.

Are you a film buff, or do you have a passion for theatre? Check out the Anthony Horowitz play at Skipton Little Theatre, the films screened at Plaza Cinema, and get your groove on at the Mad Scientist Silent Disco!

If you cannot make a specific date, do not worry! Many brilliant events are running throughout the month, such as Fresh Perspective's interactive 'paint by numbers' trail around the town, highlighting the heritage of Skipton's beautiful buildings. Entertain the kids for free every Wednesday from 26th July to 23rd August at recreational areas in Skipton, featuring bouncy castles and giant children's games. John Sherwood is the artist in residence for three months at Mill Bridge Gallery, which is now Grade II-listed, thanks to the work of Skipton Civic Society members for the HSHAZ initiative.

Spend wonderful summer days with the kids, challenge yourselves and your friends at the workshops, and enjoy Skipton's vast heritage and culture. This snapshot of Skipton Now's fantastic and thrilling events is just the beginning!
