Steeton AFC raises £400 in memorial football match

Steeton AFC held its annual 'Archie Airdrie Memorial Trophy' fundraiser match against Silsden AFC at Marley Stadium on 15 July, raising money for Airedale Hospital and Community Charity’s Haematology and Oncology Day Unit (HODU) Appeal.

After holding a raffle and taking a bucket collection, the club raised £400 for the Charity.

The annual match is in memory of Archie Airdrie, a former porter at Airedale Hospital, who had sadly passed away aged 70 in December of 2017. His wife, Janet, still volunteers at the hospital three times a week.

Stewart Airdrie, Janet and Archie’s son, said: “My dad devoted years to Steeton AFC as a player, manager, and in many other roles on the committee, as does my mum as she still volunteers at the junior games every Sunday morning.

“So, when my dad passed away, the club thought it would be fitting to have a game every pre-season to remember him and what he did for the club.

“My dad worked at Airedale Hospital for years and all his treatments were at Airedale, so it seemed right and fitting to give something back.

“I would like to thank everyone who made the day possible we have a fantastic group of volunteers, and a massive thanks to Silsden who not only took part in the game, but also provided raffle prizes. We are already looking forward to next year’s match!”

Steeton AFC won the match, ending on a 2-0 score.
