Steeton nursing home achieves Gold standard

Currergate Nursing Home in Steeton has been reaccredited with the prestigious Gold Standard Framework (GSF) Quality Hallmark Award.

The nursing home, which is owned and managed by Czajka Care Group, will collect the award and certificate later this month at the GSF conference in Manchester.

The GSF Quality Hallmark Award recognises the hard work and commitment to improving end of life care for residents. As part of the award, care homes are put through a rigorous assessment programme every three years, and team members complete an intensive training programme. Inspectors also carry out a comprehensive review across all areas of care that residents who are nearing the end of their lives receive.

Vicky Stainburn, registered manager at Currergate Nursing Home, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to been awarded the platinum level of the Gold Standard Framework, which is a step up from our last assessment. As well as a thorough inspection of all our processes and procedures, the GSF inspectors went through a recent loss that was managed by the team and assessed all our actions in great depth. The report highlighted the considerable thought, choices and support we provide our residents and their families, looking at both the medical and pastoral care provided.”

Konrad Czajka, managing director of Czajka Care Group, said: “Our wonderful team looks after 34 residents at Currergate including older people and terminal care patients, as well as providing respite and convalescence care. Our ethos is to help each person to live their life to the full, whilst being treated with respect, dignity and maintaining as much independence as possible.

“The inspectors praised our home on all aspects of the care we provide including how early a resident’s phase of illness and level of need is identified which enables us to provide proactive and supportive care to each resident. The advance care planning discussions that are offered to every resident, which leads to person centred care in line with preferences, and how residents in our home live well, with physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and practical support to reduce avoidable hospitalisation were also singled out.

“The report revealed that care in the final days is high quality, supporting residents to die comfortably in our care home, if that is their wish, and this included anticipatory prescribing and good after-death care for the resident. The report evidenced how carers and families are also supported and the awareness of the needs of relatives, friends and carers is good. The proactive support offered during transition into the care home, in the final days and in bereavement were all highlighted, as was the compassionate dignity-enhancing care given by all staff, who are themselves supported through reflective practice and self-care, within a compassionate system.”

The National Gold Standard Framework Centre in End-of-Life Care now plans to use examples of Czajka Care Group’s work to showcase best practice and inspire other care operators throughout the UK.

Currergate Nursing Home is currently undergoing a new phase of development that will see Czajka Care Group invest £1.5m in the development and refurbishment of the popular home which currently has 34 fully occupied rooms.

Rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Currergate Nursing Home first opened in 1982 and it has been owned and run by the Czajka family for 20 years. The home and its team of 53 staff provide day care, respite care, full-time care and end of life care.
