Four Healthcare Support Workers at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust have completed their training, allowing them to act as Senior Support workers in the operating theatre.
The training took around six months to complete and was made up five units built on both academic and clinical assessments.
This qualification now means that Healthcare Support Workers, Daisy Woodhouse, Brittany Hudson, Sam Laycock and Natalie Grange are able to scrub in and support the theatre team on minor surgeries.
Diane Guest, Theatre Sister, said: “Having extra people in the department who are able to scrub in on minor surgeries will help to improve the efficiency of our service enormously.
“We are really proud of everything our trainees have achieved and it will help to increase their opportunities in future.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to Cathy Creek, Jeanette Bray, Jayne Hudson and all of the theatre staff who helped to support the trainees throughout the programme.”
Having worked in the Theatres department since the pandemic, Brittany Hudson from Cross Roads, began the training programme to develop their skills further: “I joined the training programme as I wanted to be more hands on and thought it would be a great way to increase my knowledge and experience.
“I really enjoyed the practical side of the training, getting scrubbed, being given more responsibility and learning different things from different people around the department.
“I feel like I have accomplished something by doing the training and it has grown my knowledge and confidence in theatre.
“I’m excited to take the next step.”
Brittany decided to advance the training and is one of the latest recruits for the department’s successful apprenticeship programme that is jointly led by Bolton University.
“I have a huge interest in anaesthetics and always wanted to go to university, so I decided to take the next step and apply for the Operating Department Practice degree apprenticeship course.
“Over the next three years, I’ll be able to develop my skills and work alongside anaesthetists and surgeons.”
