Walkers turn out in their hundreds to support Sue Ryder Starlight Hike

Hundreds of people stepped out for Sue Ryder on Saturday 7 October for the charity’s annual walk under the stars to celebrate the memory of someone special.

Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Worth Valley, sponsored by Stirk Lambert & Co Accountants, saw 911 people sign up to take on the brand new 5k hike or traditional 10k trail in support of the national healthcare charity.

The special event began with individuals and groups, sporting bright outfits, neon face paints and glow-in-the dark accessories, transported to the start of the walk via the Starlight Express train from Oxenhope Railway before setting out around the Worth Valley villages.

There was also the opportunity for participants to pass through the starlit grounds of Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice and dedicate a star in honour of someone special to them. Crossing the finish line, walkers were presented with a well-deserved medal.

Last year Sue Ryder provided palliative care to thousands of families across the country, including from its Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice near Keighley.

Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Worth Valley is expected to raise over £70,000 to help Sue Ryder provide even more expert and compassionate palliative care and create a future where everyone has access to support at the end of their life or following a bereavement.

Hayley Ibbotson, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, said: “What an incredible evening! Thanks so much to everyone who took part. It was amazing to see everyone shining bright in dazzling outfits and spectacular accessories, celebrating the memory of their loved ones while helping to raise funds so that Sue Ryder continues to be there when it matters.

“We are also extremely grateful for the support of our dedicated team of volunteers and marshals, as well as our long-term headline sponsors, Stirk Lambert & Co Accountants and Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, for once again, putting on the magical Starlight Express train. We appreciate all the businesses and individuals who contribute to the event in so many ways, to make the night such a roaring success.

“Our Sue Ryder teams work tirelessly to ensure that our patient’s symptoms and pain are managed so that the end of people’s lives can instead be filled with friendship, family, and love in those final moments together. By taking part in this year’s Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Worth Valley, you have helped us provide more care to more people.”
