Yorkshire Day is returning to Skipton on August 1st as part of the Skipton Now Festival to allow you to celebrate our region's culture and history.
There will be plenty of fun activities taking place on the High Street to mark the day from delving into our history and listening to traditional Yorkshire dialect, fun crafting activities, a celebration of Yorkshire music and dance plus a tasty choice of Yorkshire food and drink.
The event will take place on the High Street between 10am and 4pm, with a half road closure from Otley Street to Jerry Croft. There will be a Yorkshire themed market a selection of the finest crafts, food and drink, all made and sourced in Yorkshire, you can try some Yorkshire pudding beer or just simply treat yourself to something new.
Enjoy some live music from a selection of young talented musicians, part of the Craven Music Match project which offers opportunities and support for emerging artists and musicians in Craven. There can’t be Yorkshire Day without Morris Dancers and the fantastic Great Yorkshire Morris will be entertaining us throughout the day.
Have fun with Dogs' Dales and Kettu Studios and make a finger puppet of Dogs 'Dales characters and take part in the Dogs' Dales AR trail. The children will love the giant games on offer, including snakes and ladders and Jenga or you can test your Yorkshire knowledge with our fun quiz. For the creative ones amongst us, you can join Yarndale and celebrate the textiles heritage of Skipton. Take part in the woolly workshops to make and create, try simple knitting and crochet techniques to make a bunting display to welcome visitors to Yarndale in September.
Pop along to Skipton Library’s Heritage Fair where you can explore the history of Skipton and Craven as the new augmented reality local history trail on the What Was Here app is launched. Watch the premier of ‘Then and Now’, a short film put together by students highlighting the history of various buildings on the High Street. You can also meet the Yorkshire Dialect Society, have a go at speaking some traditional Yorkshire dialect or see if you know what it means!
While you are there children can learn about this year’s Ready, Steady, Read challenge and pick up their starter pack. As they read the six books, they collect exclusive prizes along the way. We’re celebrating the start of the challenge in Skipton with Craven’s own double gold medal winning Paralympian and children’s author Danielle Brown! Sign up to the challenge as Danielle puts us through our paces with some brilliant sport and reading activities.
Away from the High Street you can join Fresh Perspective in a live interactive ‘paint by numbers’ mural painting. You are invited to paint small sections of a mural designed by year 9 and 10 students at Skipton Academy. This mural will then be installed at Skipton Bus Station to inject some life and colour into the area and become a beacon of community spirit and creativity.
