Dad of meningitis survivor takes on Tri-National Challenge to raise money for prosthetics

Adam Mortimer and his team have taken on a Tri-National Challenge to raise money for his son's bionic prosthetics.

His son, Luke, was rushed to hospital in 2019 after contracting meningitis. His life was saved, but all four of his limbs had to be amputated.

Adam, from Embsay, said:

"The impact of this changed everything overnight for our family and of course most importantly for Luke.

"He has bravely faced challenges no-one can understand unless they’ve been there.
"His tenacity, determination and sheer force of personality make us proud every day."

Luke is now 12 and will be under the hospital team until he’s 21.

The NHS is only able to fund the basic.

Bionic prosthetics and adaptations enable Luke to partake in school life and play sport but cost over £90,000 for his legs and arms and they need to be replaced as he grows.

To raise money for this cause, Adam with his friends and family took on a huge challenge last weekend (20-22nd June)

They travelled the length of Loch Lomond (22 miles) by canoe, then walked the Welsh 3000s (30 miles) before cycling the length of the Leeds Liverpool canal (127 miles) - so completed a total of 179 miles in three days!

The team were also doing it to raise money for SELFA who help children and families in the Craven area experiencing vulnerabilities, to build resilience, thrive, and achieve.
