In 2022, Airedale Hospital and Community Charity were the beneficiaries of a grant from NHS Charities Together for two ChargeBoxFAST charging stations, each costing £12,000 that provide free charging for all mobile devices.
The charging units provide fast charging and are easy for people to use: simply open an available locker, plug your device into the correct charging cable, lock the door, and leave your device to charge for 30 minutes.
Three years on, the charging stations have charged nearly 50,000 devices with the most used station located at Airedale General Hospital’s Emergency Department. The charity team saw a gap and a need to invest funds into patient experience and employee wellbeing at Airedale.
Jodie Hearnshaw, Charity Manager commented:
“When the charging stations were first installed, our main focus was on keeping people connected. Whether that be patients, visitors or our colleagues, the charging stations are available for everyone to use should they need to.
“We’re living at a time where mobile phones are essential so keeping them charged really helps to alleviate the anxiety of being disconnected from friends and family at a time of need.”
The charging station located in the main entrance of Airedale General Hospital next to the communal seating area is accessible to patients on the wards and visitors to the Haematology and Oncology Day Unit (HODU) for patients receiving treatment.
Jodie continued:
“The charging stations are also a great addition to our wellbeing promise for our colleagues at Airedale. The stations are located in accessible areas so that everyone is welcome to charge their devices whilst on site. We would also like to say thank you to AGH Solutions for supporting this project.”
To make the project possible, Airedale Hospital and Community Charity received grant funding from NHS Charities Together – the national independent charity that cares for the NHS and works with the network of 238 NHS charities.
