In a recent article, The Guardian online named the top 10 best UK Woolands.
The article was in collaboration with the conservation charity, Woodland Trust.
Skipton Castle Woods is a 36-acre woodland behind the medieval castle.
The other woodlands that were named were:
- Avon Valley Woods
- Credenhill Park Wood
- Mourne Park
The woods has been used as a source of water, fuel, timber and game by the castle’s inhabitants, the woods’ history is also tied up with the town’s more recent industrial heritage.
In the article the Guardian describe the woods:
"Situated alongside one of Britain’s best-known medieval castles, which is centrally positioned within the town, Skipton Castle Woods is one of our rarest commodities – an ancient woodland just off the high street!"
