North Yorkshire Council to consider new parking principles

North Yorkshire Council is set to review parking principles in the region.

North Yorkshire Council will discuss a proposed set of parking principles aimed at creating a consistent approach across the county.

The proposals are due to be considered by the council’s executive members on Tuesday 19th August.

If adopted, the principles would replace existing policies inherited from former district and borough councils.

The framework is intended to guide how parking is managed and developed, with priorities including meeting local needs, supporting transport connections, and accommodating infrastructure such as electric vehicle charging points.

The proposals also set out aims for the parking service to be self-sustaining, provide value for money, and ensure fairness across the county’s 170 car parks.

The principles would be implemented in three stages:

Adoption of the framework
A review of parking tariffs later in the year
Development of local town parking strategies in 2026, with public consultation.

North Yorkshire Council has stated that the principles are intended to align with wider goals relating to sustainability, economic growth, and accessibility.
