Skipton MP calls for mandatory autism training for teachers

Skipton MP Julian Smith has renewed his call for mandatory autism training for teachers.

This is a continuation for his long standing advocacy for the rights of autistic children and their families.

During Education Questions in the House of Commons on Monday, Sir Julian urged Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary to introduce mandatory training for teachers that will help them better understand the needs of neurodivergent pupils in the classroom.

Julian Said,

"One of the best ways to support autistic children in schools is for teachers to go through training and really understand the challenges that neurodivergent children face."

Julian previously contributed to the debate on the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill.

He continues to seek progression of the governments Neurodivergent Task force and asked about plans for teaching training.

Secretary Phillipson responded, confirming that from September, all new entrants to the teaching profession will receive enhanced training on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). She also recognised the need to better support existing teaching staff in meeting the needs of neurodiverse students.
