Skipton MP raises wildfire concerns over Grimwith Moor

Skipton and Ripon MP Julian Smith has raised concerns in the House of Commons about proposed changes to moorland management and the potential impact on wildfire risks in upland areas.

The Conservative MP raised the issue following a recent visit to Grimwith Moor, where he met local land managers to discuss the future of moorland management.

During his question in Parliament, Mr Smith highlighted concerns raised by moorland owners and managers about proposed restrictions on controlled burning practices.

He warned that changes to existing management practices could potentially leave upland areas more vulnerable to severe wildfires.

Mr Smith called on First Secretary of State, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Cabinet Office Louise Haigh MP to engage with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) over the concerns.

He pointed to the experience of land managers who have traditionally used controlled burning as one of the methods involved in managing vegetation on moorland and reducing wildfire risk.

The parliamentary intervention followed Mr Smith's recent visit to Grimwith Moor, where he was joined by North Yorkshire Councillor Richard Foster.

During the visit, they met local gamekeeper Graham Binns to discuss proposed changes to heather-burning regulations and the future management of the area's moorland.

Responding to Mr Smith's question in the Commons, Louise Haigh said she would discuss the matter with DEFRA.
