Just Makers opens new premises in Skipton

Just Makers in Craven Court, Skipton.

Independent art and craft retailer Just Makers has opened its new premises in Skipton after relocating from Ripley, where it had been based for the past 10 years.

The business has moved into larger premises in Craven Court and features the work of more than 80 artists and craftspeople from across Yorkshire and beyond.

Visitors can browse a range of products including original artwork, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, homeware and gifts.

Just Makers is owned by Helen Barnes, who took over the business in 2025 after a career in nursing.

She said the aim is to create a welcoming space where people can enjoy art and handmade crafts in an informal setting.

As well as its retail offering, the new premises will host workshops, artist demonstrations, exhibitions and other creative events, giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about the makers and the techniques behind their work.

Helen said:

"One thing I've learned is that many people can be quite intimidated by art and galleries, thinking that it's not for them because they don't know much about it or wouldn't consider themselves an art lover.

"I want Just Makers to be somewhere everyone feels comfortable walking in, whether they are nine, ninety or anywhere in between.

"If a piece makes you stop, smile or simply catches your eye, that's enough.

"You don't need an art degree to appreciate it, and buying Yorkshire art doesn't have to mean taking out a second mortgage either."

Helen said she chose Skipton because of its independent business community and established creative scene, and hopes to work with other local organisations to encourage more people to discover the work of Yorkshire artists and makers.
