Local organisations assist Police in Operation Tornado

Skipton Town Hall with North Yorkshire Police

Police activity across Skipton and the wider Craven area has been stepped up as part of Operation Tornado, a county-wide initiative designed to increase visibility and tackle local crime.

During the latest 24-hour operation, officers carried out a range of activities across both the town centre and surrounding rural communities.

This included three warrants in Skipton and nearby areas in the search for stolen goods and drugs, as well as additional high-visibility patrols in residential streets and central shopping areas.

Uniformed and plain-clothes officers also undertook targeted work to reduce town-centre offences such as shoplifting, which included confronting known offenders.

The Rural Taskforce visited farms and livestock auctions to offer crime-prevention advice, while all-terrain police motorbike units conducted patrols in more remote villages.

Drop-in sessions were held at Skipton Town Hall and Morrisons for residents wanting to raise concerns and Skipton BID attended meetings to suport the officers in their mission.

Teams from Immigration Enforcement joined officers on visits to businesses to check legal working status and ensure there were no risks to staff welfare, including potential signs of modern slavery or human trafficking.

Craven Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Paul Crabtree said the aim of the operation is to reflect what residents have been asking for.

“It’s about enhancing our local day-to-day police presence with extra resources from other areas, working with other teams and tackling the issues that affect you and your community.”

He added that while the concentrated 24-hour effort is a key element of the initiative, work is also being done to free up more officers to carry out regular patrols in communities across Craven
