Repair café back in Skipton this weekend

A free community repair café is returning to Skipton this weekend.

Share Skipton is hosting its monthly Repair Café on Saturday (25th July) from 10am until 1pm at St Andrew’s Church, opposite the Library of Things.

Visitors are invited to bring along items including toasters, bikes and chairs, where skilled volunteers will attempt to repair them free of charge.

Organisers say the event is designed to reduce waste, save people money and create a welcoming community atmosphere.

Jill Coope, project coordinator for Share Skipton, said:

“Our motto is simple: fix it, don’t bin it. With the rising cost of living and environmental concerns, we want to empower people to repair what they own.”

The Repair Café is free to attend and has been made possible through funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The Repair Café movement began in the Netherlands in 2009, founded by Amsterdam journalist Martine Postma.

The idea was to create informal community spaces where people could repair broken items with help from skilled volunteers, rather than replacing them.

Following the success of the first event in Amsterdam, the Repair Café Foundation was established in 2011 to help communities around the world launch similar projects.

Repair Cafés aim to reduce waste, encourage practical repair skills and bring people together through shared learning and sustainability initiatives.
