South Craven sixth formers make Westminster trip

Students from the sixth form at South Craven School have visited Parliament this week and held a Q&A with local MP Sir Julian Smith.

On the trip yesterday (Tuesday 23rd September), the teenagers had an interactive tour of the Palace of Westminster, followed by a workshop and chance to put questions to the Skipton MP.

The students met Julian in the Education Centre where the workshop session saw them play out their hustings, representing four different parties in front of him, before they took the opportunity to ask him a variety of questions regarding political leaders, parties and how to get involved with politics.

The group also spent some time debating Brexit, and the pros and cons of leaving the EU.

Sir Julian chatted to the students about their plans post-education, and he says he was pleased to hear about a range of options being pursued, from signing up to the Army, to journalism, fashion design, international relations and business studies.

Commenting on the visit, Julian said:

"It was great to meet the enthusiastic students from South Craven Sixth form during their trip to Westminster.

Their insightful questions and passion shown is a great example of how students need to be in the working world, and we discussed the importance of good communication in all areas of life.”
