Skipton and Ripon MP, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith, met with the Chair of Hospitality, Kate Nicholls OBE, in Westminster this week to discuss key concerns facing hospitality businesses in the UK.
This week, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP met with Kate Nicholls OBE, Chair of UKHospitality, in Westminster to discuss the current pressures and challenges facing hospitality businesses across the UK.
Some of the leading challenges include rising business rates, ongoing energy costs and recent proposals to introduce a tourist tax for overnight stays.
Nicholls explained that the rise in business rates has added significant strain to businesses across the UK and is causing considerable stress. Some businesses will also be impacted by the Government’s proposal to introduce a tourist tax. Industry leaders have suggested that implementing such a tax on visitors could place additional pressure on businesses to generate income through domestic tourism.
The cost of running a business is a growing concern as well. Energy costs continue to be significantly higher than historic levels and are having a particular impact on small businesses. Energy is essential for lighting, heating and the operation of core equipment. This is especially critical in the hospitality sector, where food and drink storage, preparation and service rely heavily on consistent and reliable energy use.
UKHospitality is working to protect the hospitality industry in the UK through promotion, lobbying, and research, highlighting the positive impact hospitality businesses have on society and local communities.
